Marc Bloomenstein, OD, introduces "Challenging Patient Dialogues," a new video series tackling the question of how to discuss complex ocular conditions and symptoms with patients.
Dr. Bloomenstein talks about how he approaches the conversation when he is diagnosing a patient with cataracts. He says it is important to speak positively of the advanced technology that will treat the cataract and improve the patient’s refractive outcomes, rather than focusing solely on the negative aspects of the condition. Dr. Bloomenstein provides a number of examples of the terminology he uses to explain cataracts to his patients in a way that they can easily understand.
Dr. Dexter's Take
Patient education is one of the most important pieces of your eye examination. You could be the greatest clinician out there, consistently diagnosing and managing complex ocular conditions, but if you can't effectively communicate with your patients, this is a huge limiting factor.
It is important to make sure that every patient of yours fully understands the condition of their eyes, what you have observed during your examination, what you (and they) should be looking out for in the future, and what treatment options you are recommending for them.
Dr. Marc Bloomenstein does a great job in this video discussing ways in which we can better educate our patients regarding cataracts.
