Here is an infographic on the DOs and DONTs of Contact Lens Wear. Be sure to check out our other fact posts!

  1. Always wash your hands with soap and water, then dry them with a lint-free towel before handling your contacts.
  2. Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace your case at least every 3 months.
  3. Use fresh solution to clean and store your contact lenses. Never reuse old solution or add new solution to old solution.
  4. Rinse the contact lens case with fresh solution (NOT water). Then leave the empty case open to air dry.
  5. During cleaning, rub your contact lenses with your fingers, then rinse the lenses with solution before soaking them (even if your solution is of the “no-rub” variety).
  6. Always remember that your contacts come FIRST when it comes to makeup. Put your contacts in first (before applying makeup) and take your contacts out first (before removing your makeup).
  7. Do not transfer contact lens solution into smaller travel-size containers. This can affect the sterility of the solution.
  8. Do not allow the tip of the solution bottle to come in contact with any surface, and keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
  9. Minimize contact with water. This includes removing lenses before going swimming or in a hot tub.
  10. Do not wear your contact lenses if you notice any redness, irritation, light sensitivity, decreased vision, or discharge. If any of these symptoms occur, contact your optometrist immediately.
