Link: Explaining Glaucoma to Patients

Written by Amanda Dexter | Mar 12, 2019 5:00:00 AM

One of the hardest parts of an eye examination is the patient education.

Ben Gaddie, OD, sits down with Marc Bloomenstein, OD, (and a glass of bourbon) to share tips on how to discuss a glaucoma diagnosis with patients. Dr. Gaddie says the disease is one of the leading causes of blindness and that comprehensive screening is important. The two doctors discuss the diagnostic tests needed to assess the appropriate level of treatment and how to discuss glaucoma management with patients.

Dr. Dexter's Take

We all know how to run pre-tests, check vision, refract, evaluate the health of the eyes, and diagnose conditions, but explaining everything that you've come up with, and what to do next, in words that your patient can understand can be quite difficult. You can be the best optometrist in the world when it comes to diagnosing pathology, but if you can't communicate your findings to your patient, it means nothing to them. In this video below, Drs. Marc Bloomenstein and Ben Gaddie guide you through some of the ways to help you explain a complicated disease process like glaucoma to your patients.
